At 2:30 pm on October 12, 2018,College ofForeignLanguages Henan University hold a lecture entitled "Translation Research Methods and Models",The speaker was Professor Zhu Zhiyu from Harbin Institute of Technology. ProfessorZhugraduated from Tianjin Foreign Studies University, he got Philosophy Master Degree fromThe Chinese University of Hong Kongand Ph.D. (Comparative Literature)fromthe University of Hong Kong.Now, heis the Director of the Translation Research Center of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.In 1999,he won the STEPHEN C. SOONGTranslationAward.He is currently teaching in the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He‘s abouttranslation theory, translation history and other courses,he is also the Director of the Translation Center, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. At present, his mainresearch projects include the history of translation theory and the typology of translation. Themain research areas are translation studies,which includethe development of Chinese translation theoriesand translation typology.Mr. Guo Shangxing chaired thislecture,teachers,postgraduatesand doctoral studentsattended it.
Professor Zhu said that different forms of papers have different requirements, formats, contents, and methods.He noticed that different paper should have different styles but it’s format should be relatively uniform.Usually, one paper topic has different research methods which led to different conclusions, if the method is not reliable, it may cause wrong conclusions.He suggested that themaster and doctor paper should be specific rather than empty, and the paper research should follow three steps, they are data, interpretation and explanation. Furthermore, he elaborated some details about literaturereview, research purposes and research methods.In the end of the lecture, Professor Zhu talked about some common questions in writing of essays, which provide good experience for student’s future essay writing.
Finally, the on-site teachers and students actively askedsomequestions about the content of the lectures and academic confusionand professor Zhu answered these questions one by one which push the atmosphere into the climax.
This lecture helped the students to understand the basic methods of postgraduate thesis writing, and provided clear writing ideas and inspiration for the students who initially contact the master's thesis, whichhas thegreat significance to the future thesis writing of graduate students.(author: Xia Jie)
