At 2:30 pm onOctober26th,the School of Foreign Languages held a lecture entitled "Talmy Cognitive Semantics Extension: Macro Events and Grammaticalization". The presenter is Professor Li Fuyin, a doctoral tutor at the School of Foreign Languages, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Dr. Li graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently the editor of Cognitive Semantics, an international journal of English, a member of the International Society for Cognitive Linguistics, a member of the American Academy of Cognitive Sciences, a member of the International Metaphor Research and Applied Research Association, an adjunct professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, and the founder of the International Forum on Cognitive Linguistics in China and the organizer of the 11th International Conference on Cognitive Linguistics. The lecture was hosted by Professor Yang Chaojun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages.Manyteachers, graduate students and doctoral studentsof Foreign Language School also participated in this lecture.
Professor Li pointed out that the current research on Talmy linguistic typology mainly focuses on "verb frame language" and "satellite framework language", and the research on the diachronic nature of the macro event is less involved. Thislecture takes the diachronic development of Chinese directional verbs as a clue, discussinghow the linguistic form constitutes a macro event through the event fusion mechanism, showingthe influence of grammaticalization on the transformation of Chinese type, and proposinga new idea for the extension of Talmy's cognitive semantics.Professor Li explained the concept of macro events (consisting of two relatively simple times and their interrelationships) by focusing on the two-way nature of typology and the semantics of trending complements in Chinese, thus demonstrating his views and pointing out The study combines two different areas of grammaticalization and typology to provide a new approach to linguistic research.
At the end of the lecture, Prof. Li gave detailed answers to the questions raised by the teachers and students, and conducted in-depth discussions with Professor Yang Chaojun and Professor Zhang Keding. This lecture is a vivid academic feast, leading teachers and students to appreciate the charm of cognitive semantics and solve the confusion of academic research for everyone. Dean Yang Chaojun also hopes that all ofstudentscan learn from Professor Li's low-key personality and rigorous academic attitude, make breakthroughs in cognitive semantics and other academic fields, and plan for future academic research.(author:Wang Yige)
