On the afternoon of November 9, 2019, Professor Bo Wenze, doctoral supervisor of Peking University gave a lecture entitled “How to Read Linguistic Literature” at School of Foreign Language. The undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students and some teachers from the School of Foreign Languages attended the lecture. The lecture was presided over by Vice Dean Jiang Ling.
First of all, Professor Bo pointed out that different disciplines need different academic research methods. For the comprehensive discipline of foreign linguistics, the graduate students of this major know the research object well, but they know little about the research methods. Therefore, graduate students need to learn to study literaturein order to take the first step in academic research, master the research status of this discipline, determine the research direction, and learn research methods. Then, Professor Bo introduced in detail the method of studying literature. He point out that before studying literature, we should gain the basic knowledge of linguistics, and extensively browse general works at this stage. Then, we should collect all the references make special catalogues, and read the relevant books, so that we can supplement and innovate on the basis of previous studies. After determining the research direction, we should carefully read the literature so as to understand the research trends of this discipline and learn the research methods. Finally, Professor Bo concluded that reading literature is the only way to understand the development of the discipline, an effective way to master research methods and form a personal research style, and the only way to achieve self-growth and transcendence.
At the end of the lecture, professor Bo gave a detailed answer to the questions raised by the audience, and suggested that everyone should “learn the knowledge that is urgent” when reading documents, read accurately and efficiently, and hoped that everyone could find a suitable research method as soon as possible.
