On the afternoon of December 20, 2019, School of Foreign Languages held a lecture entitled “Cognitive Linguistics Applications to Language Teaching”. The lecture was given by Professor Liu Zhenqian of Shandong University, and was presided over by Yang Chaojun, Dean of School of Foreign Languages. Relevant teachers, doctoral students, and postgraduates attended the lecture with enthusiasm and interest.
Professor Liu explained the topic from six aspects: research background, literature review, theoretical basis, research methods, conclusions and implications for teaching. He introduced the use of particles in the collocation of verb phrase and led audiences to discover the theoretical basis behind the common collocation. Professor Liu compared the difference of teaching effect between traditional teaching methods and teaching methods based on cognitive linguistics, and pointed out that the teaching method based on cognitive linguistics advocates the combination of deduction and induction. He explored how cognitive linguistics can offer alternative ways of teaching verb phrases.
Professor Liu pointed out that the role of cognitive linguistics in the teaching of verb phrases cannot be ignored. Teachers should cultivate students’ creative thinking so as to discover the hidden meaning of phrases.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Liu interacted with the audience to discuss the issues of English writing, vocabulary teaching and teachers’ autonomy in class. He also cheered up the audience’s confusion of cognitive linguistics applications to English teaching.
Professor Liu’s in-depth explanation benefited the audiences greatly. His lecture provided not only new ideas to teaching methods, but also effective methods of English learning for the audience. (Author: Xue Xiaoying)
