On the morning of June 16, the secondsessionoftheinternational seminar on Culture and Literaturehosted by the School of Foreign LanguagewasheldviaVoov Meetingplatform as scheduled. Thekeynotespeaker, Professor Lisa E. Bloom,madea wonderfulpresentation with the topic of“Art of the Polar Regions in the Time of Climate Change” tothe audience. Professor Jiao Xiaoting from the SFLpresided over theseminar. Otherteachers, undergraduates,and postgraduates joined initonline.
Professor Bloom is a scholar in residence at the Beatrice Bain Center in the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.To begin with, she pointedout that crisis of climate is also a crisis of culture and imaginationby quoting fromIndian writer Ghosh. Later, she introduced her monographGender on Ice: American Ideologies of Polar Expeditions,the first critical feminist book to date on the Arctic and Antarctic written from a feminist perspectivewhose publishingwasa big eventat that time. In addition, Professor Bloom mentioned that climate change brought about by human activitieshas influenced theworldgreatly, andanalyzedthe different gender subjectivity of human beings in the study of North and South Pole issuesbydetailed introduction of three well-known female artists and someattractivepolar landscape pictures.
Professor Bloom’s researchwasnotconstrained bytext/discourseitself, but provides amuch higherperspectiveby combining environment.Her novel presentation was followed bythe scheduled part of Q&Alater.
